School BackgroundThe
Anchorage Classical Ballet Academy is a non-profit organization founded
in 1997. The Academy is the official school of the Anchorage Ballet, a
festival ballet company in residence at the UAA Williamson Auditorium.
Anchorage Classical Ballet Academy also works closely with Dancers’
Workshop, a privately owned dance school located about 30 miles from
Anchorage in the town of Wasilla AK. Many ACBA instructors also teach
at Dancers’ Workshop to supplement their income.
ACBA offers classes primarily to children ages 3-16, and a small base
of adult students. We are a mostly recreational school with a
professional edge. We provide professional instruction to aspiring
professionals and recreational dancers. Some of our students have
graduated to professional dance schools, dance Universities and dance
companies. We differ from your typical “recreational dance school” in
that we believe that all of our students can enjoy the discipline of
dance, have fun while receiving high quality dance education, and
because of that education, be able to have real choices regarding their
future in dance, if they choose to have one.
We regard performing to be a vital part of the education our
students receive. Throughout the season, ACBA and Anchorage Ballet
produce five shows ranging from The Nutcracker and professional one-act
story ballets, to fundraisers and our annual recital. We also guest
perform annually with several other local dance groups.
Why Teach With Us?
There are several schools you may choose to teach dance around the
Anchorage area. Why should you consider teaching dance with us? If you
have freedom to express your artistic style through teaching, the main
difference will be how the organization of the studio affects your
satisfaction and ability to focus on your teaching.
Here are reasons why dance teachers choose to teach at ACBA:
Small Class Sizes At ACBA we
limit class sizes to make it easier for teachers to monitor and control
the class and to facilitate personalized attention for the students.
Our classes for ages 3-4 are limited to 8 students per class. Our
classes for ages 5 and up are limited to a maximum of 12 per class.
Administrative Support
In many dance schools there is no receptionist on duty. This means that
the teachers are faced with administration details when they should be
concentrating on teaching. We have front desk administrative staff on
duty during all class times to handle routine questions and any details
that arise. This also insures that you are never alone with a group of
children, as you have assistance from the Administrator with things
like bathroom breaks, band-aids, hair, etc. (especially with young
children’s’ classes).
Floating Marley Dance Floors
We use professional floating Marley dance floors in all of our
studios. This state of the art floor helps prevent injuries and
fatigue. A good quality floor is a consideration if you are going to be
teaching for a few hours each day. A supportive, quality floor allows
you to protect your most important asset – your body and your ability
to teach.
The Extras We try to take care of
all the extra details throughout the year. Our teachers are not
required to collect fees or hand out memos to students. We also assist
our staff with costumes and all the organization of performances and
recitals. We try to have everything set so that our teachers are free
to concentrate on teaching and choreographing.
Professional Development
We are dedicated to a high caliber of education and believe in
refresher courses and the professional development of our school. Once
an instructor has demonstrated a strong commitment to the program, the
Academy will invest in the professional development of that instructor.
These include scholarships to ballet workshops and teaching seminars as
well as teacher training programs and in house syllabus work.
